Grade Reconfigurations

We know from research and experience that minimizing transitions supports strong academic performance and meaningful relationships with teachers and peers.  This change is a continuation of our work to create consistent grade configurations district-wide so that students in Tulsa Public Schools would experience no more than two transitions: from 5th grade to 6th grade and from 8th grade to 9th grade. Additionally, in a middle school setting, students will have expanded access to developmentally appropriate activities, spaces, and experiences. It is our intention that by the 2021-2022 school year, students at Tulsa Public Schools would experience no more than two transitions - from 5th to 6th grade and from 8th to 9th grade.

The board approved Superintendent Deborah Gist's recommendations at the January 21, 2020 board meeting. Beginning in the 2020-2021 school year:

  • Rogers and Central will become 6th-12th grade campuses;
  • Memorial Junior High will become a 6th-8th grade middle school;
  • 6th grade at Burroughs, Emerson, Academy Central, and Tisdale will move to ;
  • 6th grade at Key, Marshall, and Salk will move to ;
  • Rising 6th graders at Sequoyah will have preference at  or attend  as their neighborhood school; and
  • Rising 6th graders at Kendall-Whittier Elementary will have preference at Rogers.

Students who live more than 1.5 miles away from their school or who attend a magnet or charter school can use bus transportation.

Students and families will be invited to attend “Open House” events in the early spring of 2020. Families can also contact the school directly to schedule a visit to learn more about the school.

Our commitment to Tulsa students and families is to provide access to exceptional learning experiences, including

  • Effective instruction that addresses the social-emotional and cognitive needs of students;
  • Opportunities for arts and wellness programming;
  • Consistent grade configurations that minimize transitions;
  • High-quality, age-appropriate classrooms and facilities
